PIER aims to expand our knowledge of economics and understanding of the Thai economy by supporting distinguished researchers and high-quality research. To this end, PIER provides funding and grants for policy-relevant research on the Thai economy.
Currently, PIER has partnered with the Thai Research Fund to support the “Joint Project on the Development of Knowledge on Socioeconomic Aspects of Thai Households”. This project focuses on building a household panel data set that will allow researchers to study key issues such as household finance – including rural household risk management, rural household debt, financial or credit constraints of small businesses and households – aging society, income inequality and poverty that have direct implications for the economic and social development of the country. This project has received academic collaboration from Professor Robert M. Townsend, Elizabeth and James Killian Professor of Economics at Massachusetts Institute of Technology, an expert on economic development, monetary and fiscal economics, and economic theory. He has been studying Thai households for over 18 years. Further details can be found at http://riped.utcc.ac.th
