“Thailand may have succeeded in creating an EV market—but can it build a competitive EV industry?”
Prof. Dr. Archanun Kohpaiboon (Thammasat University) presented insights from his book "Electric Vehicles: Implications for Developing Countries", examining Thailand's transition toward electric vehicles. He argues that while Thailand's EV policies—particularly the EV 3.0 package—have successfully accelerated EV adoption, much of the growth has been driven by imported vehicles, while the development of domestic EV production and local supply chains remains a work in progress.
As EVs compete with domestically produced internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles, the transition creates significant adjustment pressures for Thailand's automotive ecosystem, including parts manufacturers and suppliers. The key challenge going forward is whether rising EV demand can be translated into long-term industrial competitiveness and a stronger domestic manufacturing base.
